4. General Business

  • Gil and Bob will spearhead a corporate fund raising drive. A progress report will be presented at the next executive meeting.
  • A workshop to build 8 sound deadening ceiling panels will be scheduled soon. Wayne will check out a possible workshop in which to do the project and is to report his findings at the next General Meeting.
  • The club will participate in the Spring Recreation Market on March 6th and 7th at Pine Centre. Set up is on Friday evening, March 5th. Volunteers to man the booth are requested.
  • Motion: To pay for Evan, the website host’s, club membership. Evan will be approached to become the Club site’s Webmaster. Moved: Gil Seconded: Brian Carried
  • Calendar sales have been a disappointment. The remaining calendars will be offered for sale at $10 each.
  • The RASC president, Rajiv Gupta, would like to visit the Prince George Centre sometime between April 16th and the 21st. Once Rajiv’s itinerary is firmed up, sometime in the next week, billeting or accommodation arrangements will be made. Tentative plans are to dine with him at a restaurant the evening of his lecture, and then host a potluck at the observatory the next evening. Gil will ask his daughter Aimee to investigate the possibility of using a UNBC lecture hall for Rajiv’s presentation.

John Ascah’s PowerPoint presentation included some NASA images from the Spitzer and Chandra telescopes. Also shown were some images of the construction work done last summer.

  • Motion: To allocate an additional $200 from the gaming account to cover the 2004 insurance policy due in September 2004
  • Moved: Brian Seconded: Gil Carried
  • Motion: Table a motion to bring up the subject at the April 2004 executive meeting to spend the rest of the gaming money.
  • Moved: Gil Seconded: Wayne Carried
  • Motion: To renew at US$50 the IDA membership.

  • The Executive will promote participation in the RASC Explore the Universe program.
  • Bob displayed a ceiling sound baffle prototype. Further testing of it’s sound deadening qualities will be done, and if the results are favourable, detailed measurements of the classroom will be taken, and an estimate of the cost/number of panels required will be submitted. Preliminary estimate per panel cost is $15
  • Further discussion with optometrist John Bosdet regarding mirror grinding will be done by Glen and possibly Maurice.

The flip mirror assembly is in the stress-testing mode.

5. New Business

  • The clearing of snow from the parking lot will no longer be free, as Tom Laing is not well enough to continue with the donation of his time and operating the snow clearing equipment. Arrangements have been made with another neighbour to have the clearing done for $30 a visit. Snow clearing will be kept to an absolute minimum.
  • Motion: To send Tom a Get Well card along with a Fruit Basket or Flowers.

  • Motion: To have a $48 advertisement inserted in the City of Prince George Spring/Summer Leisure Guide. The ad focus would be on booking Observatory tours.

5. New Business (Continued)

  • Bob donated 2 boxes of Astronomy books for use by club members.
  • Gil is looking for photos that could be included in a ‘Year in Review’ presentation to be shown at the Christmas Pot Luck gathering. Please send your submissions by email to gil-pg@shaw.ca or drop them off at Speedie Printers.
  • If you plan on beginning or renewing your Sky and Tel subscription in February, please give Rod two US$20 bills. By paying in this manner, Rod’s work of remitting the payment is made far easier.

Wednesday, Dec 10 3rd Annual Pot Luck Christmas Party at the Observatory 6 p.m.
